Ride-sharing is coming to upstate New York in early July!
Uber and Lyft are now taking applications or those who want to become drivers in upstate New York.
Uber has said 50,000 people in Upstate New York have signed up to become drivers.
While both companies are expected to come to upstate New York by July, there is still some uncertainty as to what the fares will be or whether the app will be rolled out city by city or all at once.
Are You Interested In Becoming an Uber or Lyft Driver in Upstate New York?
Below are the requirements for drivers and their vehicles, according to both companies.
Uber Driver & Vehicle Requirements
Driver Must:
- be at least 21 years of age
- have at least one year of driving experience, and three years of driving experience if you are under the age of 23
- be able to pass a background check
- have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and a bank account
Vehicles Must:
- have a four-door vehicle that seats at least five people, including the driver
- be fewer than 15 years-old
- not be salvaged, reconstructed or rebuilt
- not be a rental car
- not have any “cosmetic damage, missing pieces, commercial branding, or taxi paint jobs”

Lyft Driver & Vehicle Requirements
Driver Must:
- Be at least 21 years old and have had an an active United States driver’s license for a year
- be able to pass a background and DMV check
- have current license plates, registration and insurance with your name on the policy
- own a smart phone
Vehicles Must:
- Pass a vehicle inspection
- not be a taxi or limousine
- not have dents or external damage
- have functioning brakes, windows, lights, seatbelts, seats and mirrors
- and have tires that pass the “penny test“

How Will Driver Compensation Work?
Uber and Lyft take a percentage of the fare, and the driver will take the rest. The amount the apps take from the fare varies. Drivers will pay for fuel and maintenance on their vehicle. The companies will not provide health insurance.
However, the drivers will be eligible for Workers’ Compensation through the Black Car Fund.
